Nottingham heatwave report

Design of a research report exploring the impacts of the 2022 heatwave on health and wellbeing in Nottingham.

The University of Nottingham is a public research university with a reputation for world-changing research. A study, funded by Research England, was conducted alongside Nottingham City Council to identify the impacts of the 2022 heatwave on Nottingham’s residents.

With previous findings that areas in Nottingham were at higher risk during heatwaves, researchers aimed to capture the effect this has on people’s health and wellbeing. Primarily through recollections of their experiences, the report was designed to highlight, in an accessible and consumable manner, the impacts across the home and work environments and how social inequalities exacerbated the effects.

Leveraging the University’s own visual language, the look and feel links to the institution whilst allowing flex to demonstrate its wider relationship with the council. The warm palette of colours ground the report within the topic whilst providing the opportunity, when offset and overlaid, to highlight the multifaceted memories of the individuals. Drawing on personal accounts, the quotes, used as focal points throughout the report, offer contrasting recollections which are emphasised by the right/left placement, whilst simple data graphics provide broader evidence of the varied experiences.
